Yma Sumac news
◦ may 2, 2007:
Yma-Sumac.com reports: On April 14th, Armenian sculpter Alice
Melikian was honored for her 80th birthday. Among her work, was a
large display of an Yma Sumac bust that was breath-taking! It was
created in 1961, when Yma Sumac was in Russia. We are tying very hard
to obtain some images of it for the site. Miss Sumac did not attend,
but her manager and personal assistant went on her behalf.
◦ novemer 12, 2006: on 14 november
ESP Disk
will release Recital,
a previously unreleased live album by Yma Sumac, recorded in Romania
in 1961.
From the liner notes: "Probably the most interesting aspect of this
disk is that it shows how different Yma and her music were in front of
an audience rather than in a recording studio. Not only is her singing
different but also the 'sound' of her music. One clearly begins to
understand the reasons for the problems that arose for the group once
the recordings were released."
◦ january 29, 2006: Universe have released a new Yma Sumac
compilation:
Queen of Exotica. This 2-CD set contains 4 complete classic
albums ("Exotica: Voice Of Xtabay," "Inca Taqui (Chants Of The
Incans)," "Legend Of The Sun Virgin" and "Mambo!").
◦ february 10, 2005: a
new Yma Sumac
website is online now.
◦ october 1, 2003: Two reliable sources inform us that the rumor
about Yma Sumac's death (see below) is not true. To quote her former
secretary Sara Cloudwater: "Madame Sumac is alive and well. She is
planning on doing some new recordings which should come as welcome
news to her fans."
◦ july 14, 2003: There appears to be a rumor spreading that Yma Sumac
passed away last year. Can anyone either confirm or debunk this?
Please e-mail the webmaster.
[Note: this rumor was not true; we've left this news item online
for archival reasons]
