The Beatles’ original 1973 compilations, 1962-1966 (‘Red’) and 1967-1970 (‘Blue’) have been digitally remastered for worldwide CD release on October 18 (October 19 in North America).

The first Beatles compilations to be released after the band’s 1970 disbandment, the popular ‘Red’ and ‘Blue’ collections each feature a selection of singles and album tracks written by the band’s members.

‘Red’ and ‘Blue’ have been remastered by the same dedicated team of engineers at EMI Music’s Abbey Road Studios responsible for remastering The Beatles’ original UK studio albums, carefully maintaining the authenticity and integrity of the original analogue recordings. The result is the highest fidelity the catalogue has seen since its original release.

Taped May 10th, 1963 at Brandeis University’s First Annual Folk Festival, the tape sat in the archives of Rolling Stone co-founder Ralph Gleason’s collection for over forty years.

“It had been forgotten, until it was found last year in the clearing of the house after my mother died,” says Ralph’s son Toby Gleason. “It’s a seven inch reel-to-reel that sounds like it was taped from the mixing disc. A collector/dealer associate of the family said ‘This might be worth something to the Dylan office’ and we sold it to them last year.”

Dylan has been releasing Bootleg Series concerts for twelve years, but this is the first time a previously uncirculated show has hit the market.

The disc won’t be sold in stores, but will be delivered to everyone who buys the eight-disc Mono Recordings box set or the next Bootleg Series through Amazon.

A CD/DVD set of Dylan’s famous 1993 stand at New York’s Supper Club was nearly released instead of the Whitmark Demos. “I decided I liked the story of the Whitmark Demos better than the Supper Club,” says the source. “That will definitely come out on CD and DVD sometime soon, though.”

Meanwhile, many other Dylan projects are percolating. including a series of Bootleg Series DVDs. A box set of the complete Blonde on Blonde sessions is also being considered.

Mysterious and eclectic, the 1-800-Weirdos CD, Volume 1 -Everybody’s A Weirdo will infect your brain with with bizarre beats and strange synth sounds. Like the Jerky Boys in reverse, samples of crank callers to our phone line are synchronized to the trippy musical material, with drum beats morphing into spacey atmospheric shimmering. All of the vocals on the CD are taken from actual callers to 1-800-Weirdos.

The 1-800-Weirdos CD, Volume I – Everybody’s A Weirdo is available through CD Baby.

Jeremy X. & the Weirdos are the house band for the Weirdos TV show, broadcast on the web site www.Weirdos.TV and simulcast from live concerts. During the show, Jeremy X. takes live callers to the 1-800-Weirdos (800-934-7367) line, and even answers the phone when he’s on stage! Many forms of audience participation are included in the show.

During each live show, music is created using a dizzying array of digital synthesizers, including samples of callers and physical modeling of acoustic instruments. In addition, audio processing in realtime using digital effects and MIDI controllers creates an aural landscape that stimulates the imagination of the viewer. The visual technology includes realtime video processing of multiple cameras and multiple video overlays creating a psychedelic cornucopia of delicious eye candy.

After the live shows end, the technology is just getting started at 1-800-Weirdos. Pre-recorded videos from the 1-800-Weirdos vault as well as previous episodes of the live show are shown on the site all day and night…whenever a live show is not taking place. Also, each episode of the live show is distributed as a video podcast on Apple’s iTunes Music Store and as a standard RSS feed. Excerpts of the best bits from the shows are uploaded to YouTube, MySpace, and Facebook for fans to feed on.

Jeremy X. Halpern is the sole proprietor of 1-800-Weirdos, and founder of the multimedia performance group Verge. As musical director of Verge, he has masterminded and composed music for such bizarre epics as “Speak of the Devil (A Satanic Cabaret)” and “Battle of the Dead Celebs (A comic dance of historical significance)”, and is currently composing the score for “Mogulopolis”, a music spectacle about female robots. He recently performed at the Highline Ballroom with Michael T. & the Vanities, and at the Coney Island Sideshow with Burlesque star Bunny Love’s “Nude” band.

David Gilmour’s 2009 jam session with ambient collective The Orb has grown into an album, Metallic Spheres, to be released via Columbia/Sony Records in October. Gilmour’s contribution to the charity song Chicago, in aid of Gary McKinnon, sparked the interest of producer Youth (Martin Glover), who remixed the track and invited David to his studio for a recording session. With additional contributions from Orb co-founder Alex Paterson, the album took shape from 2009 into 2010, eventually becoming Metallic Spheres, to be released by The Orb featuring David Gilmour.

Metallic Spheres is designed to be heard in two parts – ‘Metallic Side’ (24’48″), and ‘Spheres Side’ (25’09″) – each ‘side’ containing five movements. The album features David’s guitar and lap steel guitar, plus some of his vocals from Chicago; Alex Paterson contributes sound manipulation, keyboards and turntables, while Youth adds bass and keyboards and handles the production.

The album will be available in various formats: CD; digital download; and 180-gram vinyl LP. There will also be a 2-CD version, including an extra disc, featuring an alternative mix of the album in the new 3D60™ process, which creates a 360-degree sound experience when heard on headphones, using stereo tracks without the need for any special audio equipment.

In november 2010 Norton Records will release three new Sun Ra CDs. This time the focus will not be Ra’s cosmic music, but his poetry:

Norton CD-365 – Strange Worlds In My Mind – Rare Sun Ra Space Poetry Vol. 1
For the first time to be available are rare unreleased poetry written by and performed by Sun Ra and other band members. Most of the poetry is recited by Sun Ra with the addition of 3 performances by Ray Stubbs, a man with an incredible voice and Yochanan. It is also interesting to hear early versions of poems Sun Ra and June Tyson would recite during concerts. This volume covers poetry from 1957 to 1966.

Norton CD-366 – The Sub-Dwellers – Rare Sun Ra Space Poetry Vol. 2
Volume 2 consists of poetry recitations by Sun Ra. Starting the CD begins with poetry from 1975 in a medley of poems. A large segment of this disc was recorded in Philadelphia exposing the energy and thoughts Sun Ra had and put into words. The wisdom of this poetry is important because it touches on many aspects Sunny would express during concerts. This volume covers poetry from 1966 to 1982.

Norton CD-367 – The Outer Darkness – Rare Sun Ra Space Poetry Vol. 3
Volume 3 begins with 2 extended works from an unknown poet. The poems deal from an alien’s point of view and how he views the planet earth. The first piece displays the alien from an anger perspective. The second piece examines the alien’s coming to terms point of view based around describing how it is to live on his planet. Next, this disc presents 2 poetry recitations with the first being recited by Wisteria (June Holden), John Gilmore and James Jacson. The second version of this poem presents June Tyson and Sun Ra reciting. The last 4 poems come from 1982 as part of a one hour body of work.

Research, production and mastering by Michael D. Anderson

When one thinks of the musical centers of New Zealand, the city of Tauranga doesn’t have as celebrated a history as Dunedin, Auckland or Christchurch. Which is apt, in a way, as the artist known to us only as Rotate The Completor makes music that sounds unconnected to any scene in NZ or elsewhere.

A chance encounter with an enthusiastic passerby while busking on the streets led to the receipt of a home-recorded cassette, which caught the ears of the outsider music community, although any attempts at personal correspondence with its creator from his new admirers went ignored. Armed with a guitar, kick-drum, and vocal stylings which wouldn’t sound out of place on an early Residents record, Rotate The Completors: Completed Rotations Of The… is the sound of a one-man band playing at a carnival that’s gone off the rails.

RTC’s other- / inner-wordly songs are a strangely addicting brew of low-fi bedroom pop, proggy loner folk and bouncy children’s music, with such lyrical concerns as beer-stealing cantaloupes, dead albino hedgehogs, and emphatic denials of insanity. Roaratorio is proud to present Rotate The Completors: Completed Rotations Of The…, newly mastered for vinyl, to a wider audience for the first time. The album will be released on September 21.

Bob Dylan’s The Bootleg Series Volume 9 – The Witmark Demos will be released on Tuesday, October 19th, in conjunction with the re-release of the artist’s first eight long-playing albums in a box set titled Bob Dylan – The Original Mono Recordings. Both sets have been long sought-after by collectors and fans worldwide, with The Witmark Demos seeing their first commercial release nearly five decades after they were first recorded, and The Original Mono Recordings returning to the marketplace for the first time ever on CD as well as on fully analogue 180-gram vinyl.

Both are now available for pre-sale with an exclusive t-shirt and limited edition 18×24″ Bob Dylan poster at SonyMusicDigital.com/bobdylan. You can also pre-order the CD or vinyl sets at Amazon.

The Witmark Demos features 47 Bob Dylan songs recorded by the artist accompanied only by his acoustic guitar, harmonica and occasionally piano on 2 CD or 4 LP 180-gram vinyl. All of these songs were written – and their subsequent demos recorded – before Bob Dylan turned 24 years old.

Among the many gems are 15 Bob Dylan songs that were recorded by the artist only for these sessions, and which have never been officially released to the public until now. These include the plaintive “Ballad For A Friend,” the civil rights era-inspired “Long Ago, Far Away” and “The Death Of Emmett Till,” and the poignant “Guess I’m Doing Fine.”

The Original Mono Recordings is comprised of Bob Dylan’s first eight long-playing albums, painstakingly reproduced from their first generation monaural mixes as the artist intended them to be heard. These eight albums – spanning the artist’s self-titled debut in March 1962, through John Wesley Harding released on December 27, 1967 – are universally regarded as some of the most important works in the history of recorded music.

Together with The Witmark Demos, they provide the public with a wide-ranging view of Bob Dylan’s work during the 1960s, and chronicle his amazing evolution from fledgling songwriter to one of the world’s most inventive and singular recording artists.

Raise your hands if you’re delighted to hear the good news that Sufjan is releasing an 8-song, 60-minute EP for digital download! The EP is available from Bandcamp, iTunes and most other major download stores.

All Delighted People is built around two different versions of Sufjan’s long-form epic ballad “All Delighted People,” a dramatic homage to the Apocalypse, existential ennui, and Paul Simon’s “Sounds of Silence.” The song was originally workshopped on Sufjan’s previous tour in the fall of 2009. Other songs on the EP include the 17-minute guitar jam-for-single-mothers “Djohariah,” and the gothic piano ballad “The Owl and the Tanager,” a live-show mainstay.

Asthmatic Kitty Records will make All Delighted People available on single-CD and double-LP formats later in 2010.

The new album from Nellie McKay, Home Sweet Mobile Home, will be available September 28, 2010.

Home Sweet Mobile Home is Nellie McKay’s first album of all-original material since 2007′s Obligatory Villagers, and has the musical wanderlust, lyrical playfulness and sharp point of view that has characterized her music since her breakthrough debut Get Away From Me. Songs from the new album were recently debuted during Nellie McKay’s NYC engagement at Feinstein’s, and the New York Post noted that “songs like ‘Bodega’ and ‘Caribbean Time’ feature whimsical humor and social commentary that blended in beautifully alongside the standards from the Normal As Blueberry Pie album.”

The new album, produced by Nellie McKay and Robin Pappas, was recorded in Los Angeles, New York, Jamaica and the Pocono Mountains and, even more than her previous albums, combines diverse musical moods and cultures.

“I have no idea how this album happened,” says Nellie. “I guess I was looking for a sound to reflect our shrinking world and the bleed of culture crossing all kinds of borders.”

Stay tuned for details on an Exclusive Limited Edition Deluxe album offer that includes a signed lithograph and tons of bonus content.
