Zeek Sheck review

Posted on Mar. 30th 2006 23:28 in New releases No Comments »

It’s desk cleaning time here at Weirdomusic HQ. One of the CDs we found in our ‘to review’ pile is Careco by Zeek Sheck.

To quote Electronicmusicworld.com:

With titles like “Ocean in Skin Pitchers” and “Rebrainwash Center” the content oozes with extraordinary inventiveness and perseveres in its rich, unpredictable collage of seemingly haphazard sounds. The exception being Track 4 where the vocals sound tinny and weak without effects and they never quite stick with the background sounds. Long after listening to these songs, I found myself daydreaming about ghostly trifectas of forlorn females and looking for the source of moose-like horn drones. This album should be shelved somewhere between fever dream catalysts and lulling, subversive swan songs.

Get it while you can!

Buena Vista Club’s Pio Leyva dies

Posted on Mar. 23rd 2006 22:59 in Obituaries No Comments »

Pio Leyva, a singer and composer in the Buena Vista Social Club band of veteran Cuban musicians, died on Thursday of a heart attack. He was 88.

Leyva, who won a bongo contest at the age of six and made his singing debut in 1932, had suffered a stroke on Sunday and died early Thursday morning in hospital, his daughter Rosalia said. The colorful improviser of traditional Cuban “son” music was the latest of the famed band’s stars to pass away.

Its oldest member, guitarist Compay Segundo, and pianist Ruben Gonzalez died in 2003, aged 95 and 84. Singer Ibrahim Ferrer died last year at the age of 78.
