Slide guitarist Tony Duran dies

– January 31, 2012Posted in: Obituaries

It came to our attention today that musician Anthony (Tony) Philip Duran passed away on December 19, 2011 surrounded by family in his home after a two year battle with Prostate Cancer.

Tony Duran was born on October 14, 1945 in Los Angeles, CA to Leonard Lincoln Duran and Henrietta Adeline (Penny) Duran. He graduated from Garfield High School in 1963 in East Los Angeles. Tony then joined the U.S. Army in 1965 and served until 1967 when he was honorably discharged. He was an accomplished musician having contributed slide guitar and vocals to Frank Zappa’s albums “Waka/Jawaka”, “The Grand Wazoo” and “Apostrophe”.

He toured with Zappa’s Grand Wazoo Orchestra, September 1972, and with the Petit Wazoo Orchestra (or the Mothers, as they were called at that time) from October until December 1972. He can also be heard on “Joe’s Domage” and “Imaginary Diseases”. Tony was the lead guitarist of the band Ruben and the Jets, whose first album was produced by Frank Zappa in 1973. Tony had a passion for music and was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and brother. He recently retired from the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Temple, Texas after 34 years of faithful service.

Original Mother Jim “Motorhead” Sherwood dies

– December 26, 2011Posted in: Obituaries

American musician Euclid James “Motorhead” Sherwood, notable for playing soprano, tenor and baritone saxophone, tambourine, vocals and vocal sound effects in Frank Zappa’s original Mothers of Invention, died on December 25th.

Motorhead Sherwood appeared on all the albums of the original Mothers line-up and the posthumous releases “Burnt Weeny Sandwich” and “Weasels Ripped My Flesh”, as well as a number of subsequent Zappa albums. He also appeared in the films “200 Motels”, “Video from Hell” and “Uncle Meat”.

Sherwood and Zappa met in high school in 1956. Sherwood was in a class with Zappa’s brother Bobby, who introduced the two after learning that Sherwood was a collector of blues records. Sherwood sat in with Zappa’s first band, R&B group The Black-Outs. In 1964 Sherwood and Zappa lived in Zappa’s Studio Z in Cucamonga for some time.

Sherwood first joined The Mothers of Invention as a roadie and equipment manager, also contributing sound effects (using both his voice and saxophone) to their first album, 1966′s “Freak Out”. He became a full member around the time of the group’s experimental residence at the Garrick Theater in 1967.

The nickname “Motorhead” was coined by fellow Mothers member Ray Collins, who observed that Sherwood always seemed to be working on repairing cars, trucks or motorcycles, and joked that “it sounds like you’ve got a little motor in your head”. In later years, Sherwood contributed to various projects alongside fellow Mothers alumni, including records by The Grandmothers, Mothers keyboardist Don Preston, Ant-Bee and Sandro Oliva.

Jim “Motorhead” Sherwood was 69 years old.

Beefheart’s original Bat Chain Puller to be released on CD

– December 18, 2011Posted in: New releases

Last night The Zappa Family Trust announced that Captain Beefheart‘s original “Bat Chain Puller” album from 1976 will be released on CD in february 2012. “All original tracks plus 16 minutes of fabulous bonus material”, according to their announcement.

The recordings for “Bat Chain Puller” – which never came out in its original form, but was revamped two years later for what became “Sniny Beast (Bat Chain Puller)” – featured a lineup of John French on drums, John Thomas on keyboards, and Moris Tepper and Denny Walley on guitars. The band represented what was left of the post-Bongo Fury band the Captain had put together after Elliot Ingber and Bruce Fowler had left.

Herb Cohen had authorized the recordings for Frank Zappa’s DiscReet Records, but the record was suppressed after getting caught up in a lawsuit Zappa had launched against Cohen. Tapes of the album had been sent to Virgin Records, however, as well as reviewers and radio stations. The album has since been heavily bootlegged, with titles such as Original Bat Chain Puller and Dust Sucker. The rights are owned by the Zappa Family Trust.

The album can be pre-ordered here. It is expected to be shipped during the week of February 13, 2012.

Frank Zappa’s Carnegie Hall shows to be released on cd

– October 12, 2011Posted in: New releases

Hot on the heels of “Feeding the monkies at ma maison” – which turns out to a very interesting missing link betweet “Jazz from hell” and “Civilization Phase III” – the Zappa Family Trust have more goodies in store for us: Frank Zappa‘s only two performances at Carnegie Hall in New York are about to be released on cd for the very first time.

Frank Zappa - Carnegie Hall

This 4cd-set, simply titled “Carnegie Hall” will be released around Hallowween, Zappa’s favorite holiday. At the time of these performances (October 1971) Zappa’s band included Flo & Eddie, Ian Underwood and Aynsley Dunbar. Support act The Persuasions are also included on this historic release.

“Zappa The Hard Way” paperback out in november

– October 8, 2011Posted in: Books

In 1988, Frank Zappa toured with a twelve-piece band that had rehearsed for months, learned a repertoire of over 100 songs and played an entirely different set each night. It is why, in Zappa’s own words, it was “the best band you never heard in your life”- a reference to West Coast American audiences who never got the chance to see this particular touring ensemble due to the disharmony between Zappa’s “clonemeister” Scott Thunes and nine of the other band members.

Frank Zappa - Zappa The Hard Way

‘Zappa The Hard Way’ documents that last tour, which deteriorated as the tour progressed through America and on to Europe.

If you think touring can be fun, think again! Yes there were groupies and the usual paraphernalia associated with rock ‘n’ roll, but there was also bitterness and skulduggery on a scale that no one could imagine. Author Andrew Greenaway has interviewed the surviving band members and others associated with the tour to unravel the goings on behind the scenes that drove Zappa to call a halt to proceedings, despite the huge personal financial losses.

- Format: Paperback (234 x 156 mm)
- Pages 240 text, including 37 b/w images
- Foreword by Frank Zappa’s sister, Patrice “Candy” Zappa-Porter.
- Previously unpublished photos from the rehearsals, the studio, and other off stage shots by Lynn Goldsmith, official FZ photographer for the ‘Baby Snakes’, ‘Sheik Yerbouti’ and ‘Broadway The Hard Way’ releases. Also includes many live shots from the tour.
- Full 1988 discography and set lists.
- Publication date: 21st November 2011

Frank Zappa – One Shot Deal [Zappa Records, 2008]

– May 11, 2011Posted in:

Frank Zappa - One Shot DealThe latest release from the Zappa vault is sort of like a miniaturized version of the You Can’t Do That On Stage Anymore series, spanning several different Zappa eras. The first track on One Shot Deal contains the unmistakeable vocals of Napoleon Murphy Brock and George Duke, getting down and dirty with the greasy gutter funk of Bathroom Man, which spot-lights Duke’s lively, up-beat singing and keyboard playing, followed by a blistering blast of guitar from Frank. Next up is the interstellar dissonance of Space Boogers, one of my favorites on the album, which conjures up a musical meeting between Edgar Varèse and The Max Rebo band at a wake for William S. Burroughs. Space Boogers would have felt at home on Weasels Ripped My Flesh, as would the song that follows it, Hermitage, with more zany head-melting minimalism. After that we have Trudgin’ Across The Tundra with its mellow yet slightly maniacal percussion and bass which gives off the distinct aroma of Willy The Pimp, and is quickly joined by a skittering trumpet solo by Gary Barone which is rather reminiscent of ye olde Waka Jawaka.

I just realized that if anyone reading this is not a fan of Frank Zappa then I may as well be talking in tongues. I’m just assuming that if you’re a fan of weirdomusic, then you’ll be a fan of Frank’s too. But then again, as Al Franken says, when you assume, you make an ass of Uma Thurman. Sorry Uma, but let’s move on, shall we kids? For fans of Frank’s guitar work, Occam’s Razor is the original, unedited guitar solo that became On The Bus, and truly shines without the narrative distraction on Joe’s Garage. Heidelberg is another little guitar gem taken from a performance of Yo Mama from 1987. It begins with familar territory, yet veers off becoming funkier and even catchier than the original solo. Following those 2 magical numbers we take a bit of a nose-dive in my view, with yet another version of The Illinois Enema Bandit. Having said that, the band plays brilliantly, and Zappa’s guitar solo is raw and rude, with Frank fairly well strangling the damn thing towards the end.

The Australian Yellow Snow is one for fans who like to hear amusing Zappa stage banter about huskies and piss, (among other familiar topics), which finally moves on into a killer orchestral section which doesn’t last long enough, particularly after 7 minutes of Zappa’s waffling. But the closer on the album makes up for it: Rollo is a kind of big band version of St Alphonso’s Pancake Breakfast and it kicks the proverbial poodle’s ass!

Overall, I would say that One Shot Deal is one of the best posthumous Zappa releases I’ve heard so far.

The little known history of the Mothers of Invention

– May 11, 2011Posted in: Downloads, New releases

The Zappa Family Trust celebrate a belated Mother’s Days with the release of “Penguin In Bondage – The little known history of the Mothers of Invention”. This download only release was recorded in Chicago on 10 May 1974.

Frank Zappa - Penguin In Bondage

Some more technical info – but no info on the exact contents of this release – is available on Zappa.com. Looks like it’s a long (over 26 minutes) version of the classic Zappa track “Penguin In Bondage”, with an extended blues jam at the end.

The iTunes download can be found here.

He is the official “Vaultmeister,” archiving and co-producing material from the Vault for the Zappa Family Trust since 1995. He has also been Dweezil Zappa’s choice as drummer for 18 years, from Z to ZPZ.
