Mini reviews
- Fake - as in 'synthesized' - big band arrangements of classic
Misfits songs? Completists may want to add
Misfits meet the Nutley Brass to their collection. Casual
observers are better off with a) a real Misfits cd or b) a real big
band album. (added january 30, 2006)
- Weeds is the title of a new cult tv show, shown on Showtime tv in
the US. The soundtrack, released by
Rykodisc,
is an eclectic little sucker, with tracks by Peggy Lee, Sufjan
Stevens, NRBQ, and the very wonderful Nellie McKay. A charming
compilation, even if you've never seen the tv series. (added october
20, 2005)
- On their debut album Sto correndo Italian trio
Carlo Spera &
Stereonoise try to melt influences which go from jazz to
blues, from 80s electronic music to techno pop. Their ambition to
"open a new road in pop music" may not be fulfilled, but fans of
electronica with a touch of Italian class won't be disappointed.
(added may 24, 2005)
- If you're into groovy, downtempo lounge music check out Barry
Thompson's Baby Grand. Their demo album And dream of... contains 11
tracks that will sound great on a long, warm summer evening. Visit
Clubgrand.co.uk
for more info. (added fall 2004).
- No news from America was released in 1999 by
The Skid Baxter
Project, but only recently brought to our attention. Check
it out if you like the music of Mike Keneally, Gentle Giant and Frank
Zappa. (added june 7. 2004).
- "Crazy little ingrown toenail called love" must be the funniest
song title we've come across in a long time. The track comes from
Seasonalize, a cd released in summer 2003 by Seasonal Concepts.
Seasonal Concepts was formed in 2001 in Minneapolis, after which the
core members fled to such far-flung locales as Seattle and Tokyo in an
attempt to escape their creation. Seasonalize sounds like a collage of
demo's and home-recordings, but the result is very enjoyable indeed.
Part country-folk, part early Beck, part 80s pop, part pure nonsense,
this is wholesome entertainment for the whole family! The cd is
available from
SunShip Records. (added april 24. 2004).
- Martin Denny meets Brian Wilson meets the Ventures meet... well,
there a whole lot of other incfluences on The Adilorac, the privately
released second CD by Malfuzah. The band (from Durham, North Carolina)
began as a high-school project and evolved into a live band that plays
a lot of different kinds of music. Although the press release that
comes with this instrumental CD is very modest, Malfuzah have nothing
to be shy about: The Adilorac is a very entertaining and professional
sounding album! (added november 11. 2003).

- One of the coolest things we found in our mailbox recently is a
limited edition 7" single (yep, one of those little black things) by
UK rapper Infinite
Livez. The track (vocal/instrumental) is called Pononee
girl and it's way cool. Kitschy cover, ultra dope delivery and catchy
chorus. Maybe we should add a weirdorap section just for them.
Electric ponyland indeed. (added september 29. 2003).
- Pro-choice on mental health by
Peter Dizozza is a weird CD. In fact, we don't know what to
think of it. Is this guy serious? According to his website "he devotes
his working life to creating innovative and stimulating entertainment
and helping his audience develop confidence, enlightenment and
serenity through self-expression". He can't really sing and the
'mini-plays' on this CD ramble on without making much sense. So check
it out if you're into really weird stuff, but don't blame us if you
fall asleep! (added august 2003).
- It's funny to see that a lot of CDs we receive for our reviews
section don't have anything to to do with the subject matter of our
site: weird and exotic music.
Pushing Red Buttons by the band of the same name is another
fine example we found in our mailbox recently. But don't get us wrong:
Pushing Red Buttons' second CD is actually pretty good. Well-crafted
and well-played pop songs with a Todd Rundgren-esque twist here and
there. Play it in your car and sing along! (added july 2003).
update june 1, 2004: new
Pushing Red Buttons cd available now!
- Sensitive Artist Beachball is a noisy guitar rock CD by
Vasoline Tuner.
Titles like The Power of Maria Carey's Pussy sound more promising than
they actually are, but anyone who is into slightly off-the-wall rock
might get a kick out of this 11 track CD. (added march 2003)
