Coming soon on Norton: lost Esquerita session

– March 13, 2012Posted in: New releases

Norton Records will soon release “Sinner Man: The Lost Session” by unsung rock ‘n’ roll hero Esquerita.

Esquerita

The ten unissued selections from a long lost June 1966 NYC session showcase Esquerita pounding it out on piano and organ, flashing back and forth between the two during each song, accompanied only by a drummer! Dig the over the top nine minute gospel wailin’ title track (based on Nina Simone’s version but delivered at super velocity) that’s worth the price of admission alone.

Track listing: Sinner Man #1/Hittin’ On Nothing#1/ C.C. Rider/Leave Me Alone#1/ Letter Full Of Tears/ Hittin’ On Nothing #2/On Broadway/ Nobody Knows You When You’re Down And Out/Leave Me Alone #2/Sinner Man #2

De La Soul’s Plug 1 & Plug 2 present First Serve

– February 2, 2012Posted in: New releases

First they brought you ‘The Goon Time Mixtape’ blasting from a late-night house party in a Parisian suburb. Then we saw our heroes getting endless grief from Deen’s overbearing mother in the Mrs. Whitter skit. That was all just a taste of things to come from De La Soul’s Plug 1 & Plug 2 present ‘First Serve’; a dynamic hip-hop group, an album, a concept, the soundtrack to a movie that has yet to be made and a fable for our times.

‘First Serve’ is many things, but at its heart it is the story of two young boys from Queens, New York with big dreams and larger rhymes. Two friends, Deen Whitter (aka Plug 2) and Jacob ‘Pop Life’ Barrow (aka Plug 1), friends from seventh grade, are by their own admission, “different, but the differences seem to complement everything we do.” Their name ‘First Serve’ comes from their motto, “First come, First Serve, get what you deserve.”

Due to hit the streets 2nd April 2012, the ‘First Serve’ album tells the story of two dreamers in a basement struggling to start their musical career, the battles they face, through to the point that they eventually release their debut single, ‘make it big’ and their hard work and persistence finally pays off. As we know that is rarely where the story ends and the story of ‘First Serve’ is no different. Taking place in an animated world that could have been imagined by Hawley Pratt on Magic Mushrooms, the high spirited and often hilarious journey is pure old school hip-hop; skits, disco, beats, funk, quips, burns and hustlin’ all included. Ain’t nothing gonna stop them now.

Beefheart’s original Bat Chain Puller to be released on CD

– December 18, 2011Posted in: New releases

Last night The Zappa Family Trust announced that Captain Beefheart‘s original “Bat Chain Puller” album from 1976 will be released on CD in february 2012. “All original tracks plus 16 minutes of fabulous bonus material”, according to their announcement.

The recordings for “Bat Chain Puller” – which never came out in its original form, but were revamped two years later for what became “Sniny Beast (Bat Chain Puller)” – featured a lineup of John French on drums, John Thomas on keyboards, and Moris Tepper and Denny Walley on guitars. The band represented what was left of the post-Bongo Fury band the Captain had put together after Elliot Ingber and Bruce Fowler had left.

Herb Cohen had authorized the recordings for Frank Zappa’s DiscReet Records, but the record was suppressed after getting caught up in a lawsuit Zappa had launched against Cohen. Tapes of the album had been sent to Virgin Records, however, as well as reviewers and radio stations. The album has since been heavily bootlegged, with titles such as Original Bat Chain Puller and Dust Sucker. The rights are owned by the Zappa Family Trust.

The album can be pre-ordered here. It is expected to be shipped during the week of February 13, 2012.

The Rolling Stones unlock archives

– November 17, 2011Posted in: New releases

The Rolling Stones have unlocked the door to their archive, full of music, film and memorabilia from their almost 50 year career. At www.StonesArchive.com you can listen to unheard music, view unseen photographs and films, and look at rare merchandise. Fans have the opportunity to buy items such as signed lithographs, deluxe box sets, even personalized merchandise and tour gear.

Rolling Stones - Brussels Affair

The first item the band are releasing is the long-awaited download of a legendary 1973 concert, recorded at the Forest National in Belgium. Long hailed by die-hard Stones fans as one of the band’s greatest live performances, The Brussels Affair has been a mainstay in the underground music world for years. The original bootlegs, sold under such titles as Europe 73, Bedspring Symphony and Brussels Affair, were cobbled together from assorted radio broadcasts, including the syndicated radio programme King Biscuit Flower Hour, and usually contained songs performed at other venues. The new edition, pulled exclusively from the two Brussels gigs, was taken from the original multi-track masters recorded by Andy Johns on the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio. Longtime Stones collaborator Bob Clearmountain applied the final mix.

Although the Stones began readying a live album of the show for commercial release, the idea was ultimately shelved – a tragedy given the ferocity of the set and the definitive live versions of Stones classics that it presents. Fortunately, that has all changed today. If there was one Rolling Stones bootleg that needed to find its way into the mainstream, Brussels ’73 was it.

“The Brussels Affair” can be downloaded here.

Roaratorio releases new Rodd Keith compilation

– September 23, 2011Posted in: New releases

My Pipe Yellow Dream is the second Roaratorio anthology of the highlights of Rodd Keith’s work. Rodd Keith (born Rodney Keith Eskelin; January 30, 1937 – December 15, 1974) was an American multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. He is perhaps the best known figure in the obscure musical sub-genre known as song poem music.

Song poems are song lyrics that have been set to music for a fee. This practice, which has long been disparaged in the music industry, was also known as song sharking and was conducted by several businesses throughout the 20th century in North America.

Rodd Keith - My yellow pipe dream

Compiling fifteen previously unreissued songs from 1966 through his death in 1974 – including a never-before-heard cover of “Choo Choo Train” – My Pipe Yellow Dream showcases the full range of his talents. From exquisite mid-60s pop balladry (“Deep Velvet”) to blue-eyed soul (“You Don’t Have To Alibi”) to folk-rock (“Tired Of Waiting”) to solo Chamberlain creations (“Red Sports Car”) to gospel testifying (“O Jesus My Savior”) to a pair of patriotic screeds (the all-spoken word “America The Not So Beautiful” and the bizarre-world lounge funk of “Search Out Your Soul, American”), this collection continues the rehabilitation of Rodd Keith’s recorded legacy from thrift-shop throwaway to celebrated cult artist.

A limited edition LP in a gorgeous gatefold jacket, with artwork by Josh Journey-Heinz and liner notes from song-poem vocalist Dick Kent. Digital download coupon included.

Ordering info can be found here: www.roaratorio.com

The Spinshots release debut album

– September 23, 2011Posted in: New releases

The Spinshots are a 7-piece neo-exotica band from Amsterdam, the Netherlands. They materialized from the wildest fantasies of visual artist Martin Draax who dreamt of a band that came through a crack in reality from an obscure world, bringing you tunes you’d been craving and a backbeat you never thought could be that back.

The Spinshots

The Spinshots’ influences come from around the world, past and present. Although their music is authentic and exclusively written for them, their interests are obvious: 30s big band sounds, 40s & 50s jazz and dance music, and most of all, everything from the 60s. Expect a warped mix of spy-fi, surf, soul, beat, Bollywood, klezmer, éthiopiques, garage, freakbeat and funk, like the soundtrack of a golden era in your life you had missed.

On september 24th The Spinshots will release their debut album “Never So Right”. The release party in Amsterdam is officially sold out, but of course you can order the album – avaible on cd, vinyl and as download – from their website www.thespinshots.com.

And…. The Spinshots will perform live on march 3, 2012 at the party we’ll throw to celebrate ten years of Weirdomusic.com! More info (in Dutch only, sorry folks) at www.10jaarweirdomusic.com.
