Studio One Story DVD out today

– August 1, 2011Posted in: Films/Documentaries, New releases

Soul Jazz Records’ feature-length documentary/CD/Book ‘Studio One Story’ is released today for the first time as a stand alone DVD. Soul Jazz are also re-issuing (first time in print for five years) the complete DVD+CD+Book and DVD+2LP+Book sets.

Studio One Story

The DVD is being issued as a prelude to the forthcoming deluxe-hardback book ‘Original Cover Art of Studio One Records’ released this autumn by Soul Jazz Records as well as a new Studio One album compilation to coincide with the book.

Studio One Story is a documentary this is both a staggering slice of musical history and a definitive guide to Studio One, Jamaica’s greatest ever record company, and its legendary founder, Clement ‘Coxsone’ Dodd. ‘Studio One Story’ was filmed in 2002, two years before the death of the legendary Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd, a man famously reticent of being interviewed – until the making of this film.

Described by Chris Blackwell as the Motown of Jamaica, or ‘The University of Reggae’, Studio One is where the careers of literally hundreds of reggae artists began: Bob Marley and the Wailers, Alton Ellis, The Heptones, Ken Boothe, The Skatalites, Burning Spear and Sugar Minott, to name but a few! Studio One is the ‘foundation’ label of Jamaican Reggae and Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd is seen by many as its father.

One and a half years in the making, Studio One Story is a truly unique documentary in which the late Clement Dodd gave unprecedented personal access to tell the previously untold story of how he and the many artists and musicians at Studio One literally shaped the rise of Reggae music from the 1950s onwards through to the late 1970s.

This is the true story of reggae music and its Jamaican roots told from the inside: From the rise of Kington’s sound systems in the 1940s and 1950s, through to the evolution of a Jamaican music industry (and Studio One’s dominance) in the 1960s and the worldwide success of reggae in the 1970s.

The 4 hour documentary (including over an hour of extras) was filmed on location in Kingston, Jamaica and features interviews with Horace Andy, Alton Ellis, Ken Boothe, Sugar Minott, Denis Alcapone, The Ethiopians, Sylvan Morris, Johnny Moore, Lone Ranger, King Stitt and many others. The DVD also includes rare footage of The Skatalites, Jackie Mittoo, Count Ossie, Marcia Griffiths and others.

– July 14, 2011Posted in: Books, Films/Documentaries

Using rare and unseen photos and footage (including unreleased Beatles footage), Academy Award-winning director Martin Scorsese traces the life of George Harrison. Coming this Fall.

To coincide with the release of the film, in late September, Abrams Books will publish Olivia Harrison’s George Harrison: Living in the Material World, a personal archive of photographs, letters, diaries and memorabilia from George’s life.

George Harrison book and documentary

GEORGE HARRISON: LIVING IN THE MATERIAL WORLD focuses the imaginative and inspired eye of one of cinema’s most pre-eminent filmmakers on one of the world’s most influential men. The film takes viewers on the musical and spiritual voyage that was George Harrison’s life, much of it told in his own words. The result is deeply moving and touches each viewer in unique and individual ways.

Academy Award-winning director Martin Scorsese traces Harrison’s life from his musical beginnings in Liverpool through his life as a musician, a seeker, a philanthropist, and filmmaker. Scorsese weaves together interviews with Harrison and his closest friends, performances, home movies, and photographs. Much of the material in the film has never been seen (or heard) before. The result is a rare glimpse into the mind and soul of one of the most talented artists of his generation and a profoundly intimate and affecting work of cinema.

The film includes interviews with Eric Clapton, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, George Martin, Paul McCartney, Yoko Ono, Tom Petty, Phil Spector, Ringo Starr and Jackie Stewart. They speak honestly and frankly about George’s many talents and contradictions.

Frank Zappa’s The Torture Never Stops out on DVD and Blu Ray

– November 17, 2010Posted in: Films/Documentaries, New releases

Frank Zappa’s New York Halloween 1981 concerts were filmed Live at The Palladium. This ‘thing’ entitled “The Torture Never Stops” was created in its entirety by FZ from the original concert production and intended by the Artist as one of 3 Television Specials. This is the longest version of the three – the others, “You Are What You Is” and “Dumb All Over”, having actually aired.

Halloween was Frank Zappa’s favorite holiday, and New York was the site of Frank Zappa Halloween concerts for years! The billion and a half airings by MTV of the concerts (non-edited) followed on closely from the release of the double album “You Are What You Is” in September of that year on Frank Zappa’s own recently founded and thoroughly independent label, Barking Pumpkin. Much of the set list is drawn from that work. All Frank Zappa shows were unique experiences with Zappa on guitar and baton, leading his band on flights of improvisation and drawing ever more intense performances from them. “The Torture Never Stops” cements Zappa’s reputation as one of the most innovative and challenging composers and performers of the 20th century.

– October 25, 2010Posted in: Films/Documentaries

US film maker and musician Alex Wroten informs us that he is currently planning a documentary about Weirdomusic favorites The Residents.

According to Alex this project will seek to answer questions like: How have The Residents continued to thrive, financially and artistically, and cultivate a fan following for 40 years while existing behind a veil? How have The Residents adapted to changes in media and the music industry? How have The Residents impacted music beyond their own musical contributions, through the legacy of Ralph Records and notable fans?

Find out more about the documentary and the way you can help fund this project at residents.welldang.com.

Raymond Scott documentary available on DVD

– October 6, 2010Posted in: Films/Documentaries

The documentary “Deconstructing Dad” is a music-filled biographical film about the life and work of Raymond Scott. In addition, it also is a personal investigation into the father/son dynamic — what it means to have a famous father obsessed with his work and the consequent impact on the parent/child relationship.

Raymond Scott - Deconstructing Dad

Raymond Scott was more comfortable with technology than with people, including his own children. This personal angle is intertwined with the compelling story of a true American music innovator — one who had a meteoric rise to household-name success, followed by a slow spiral into obscurity and now, posthumously, a growing acknowledgment of his central role in modern music and music technology.

After another round of revisions, adding more extras, the DVD is now available to order. Get your copy here.

Ladies and Gentlemen…The Rolling Stones

– September 22, 2010Posted in: Films/Documentaries, New releases

On October 12, Eagle Rock Entertainment will simultaneously release the DVD and Blu-ray editions of the long-awaited Ladies & Gentlemen…The Rolling Stones. This is probably the most sought after Rolling Stones concert performance and it has been fully restored and remastered from the original film print and multitrack audio masters.

Ladies & Gentlemen follows the highly successful CD reissue of Exile On Main Street in May of this year and the Stones In Exile DVD on June 22, 2010. The October 12 releases will be followed shortly after by a deluxe edition box set with additional bonus material and memorabilia.

Filmed in Texas in 1972 over four nights of the “Exile On Main Street” US tour, Ladies & Gentlemen was premiered at the Ziegfield Theatre in New York on April 15, 1974 and released into selected cinemas across the USA shortly afterwards. Bonus features on this release include tour rehearsal footage from Montreux, plus two interviews with Mick Jagger; one from a 1972 Old Grey Whistle Test show, and one filmed in 2010.

The line-up for this show comprised Mick Jagger (vocals), Keith Richards (guitars), Charlie Watts (drums), Bill Wyman (bass), Mick Taylor (guitars) with Bobby Keys (saxophones), Jim Price (horns) and Nicky Hopkins (piano). Ladies & Gentlemen was billed at the time as “…the most powerful rock film ever made” and is considered by many fans to be the finest Rolling Stones performance ever captured on film.

– May 12, 2010Posted in: Films/Documentaries, New releases

In the spring of 1971 the Rolling Stones reluctantly departed the UK to take up residence in France. Keith Richards settled at a villa called Nellcôte in Villefranche-sur-Mer and this became the venue for the recording of much of the band’s masterpiece “Exile On Main Street”.

The new dvd “Stones In Exile” (coming out june 22nd) tells the story in the band’s own words and through extensive archive footage of their time away from England and the creation of this extraordinary double album, which many regard as the Rolling Stones’ finest achievement.

The Stones in exile

Extensive additional footage including interviews with all the band members, footage from “Cocksucker Blues” and Mick Jagger and Charlie Watts returning to Olympic Studios and Jagger’s country house Stargroves where a lot of the early work on the album was done.
