The Sun Ra Arkestra returns to London

– July 15, 2011Posted in: Festivals/Concerts

The Sun Ra Arkestra
UNDER THE DIRECTION OF MARSHALL ALLEN
Cafe OTO, London, Tues-Thurs 6-7-8 December 2011

We love a big band, and the Arkestra is one of the most influential big bands of all time. This will be their fourth residency at Cafe OTO, and many will remember the five extraordinary concerts they gave when the Icelandic ash cloud made them our house band for a few precious days. They’ve been keen to get back to OTO, and we’re thrilled to give everyone a chance to see them dip into their vast songbook in such an intimate setting.

“Resplendent in sparkling red robes, Allen commanded the [Cafe Oto] stage from front left, orchestrating, directing, and choosing soloists. He was full of energy at 85 years old, and needed it as the Arkestra presented two typically far reaching sets totaling nearly 165 minutes.” — All About Jazz

TICKETS
£22 advance / £25 on the door
£60 for a three day pass

Annual Bang on a Can Marathon on June 19

– June 14, 2011Posted in: Festivals/Concerts

On Sunday, June 19, from 11am until midnight, Bang on a Can is back and kicks off the River To River Festival with its annual Bang on a Can Marathon, FREE for the public at World Financial Center Winter Garden (220 Vesey Street, NYC), co-presented by Arts World Financial Center.

The Marathon has been part of the River To River Festival for six years, and this year kicks off the month-long celebration of free music, dance, film, theater, play, and arts events throughout Lower Manhattan.

Founded in 1987, the Marathon will again bring together more than 150 astounding performers and composers from around the world, performing in numerous experimental genres. Bang on a Can’s annual 12-hour-plus Marathon has become one of the most diverse, open, and engaging music events in the world.

Of last year’s event, The New York Times reported, “Disparate strands from the contemporary classical, jazz, electronica, world music and indie rock spheres were neatly woven together into a crazy-quilt epresentation of adventuresome notions. You could liken the program to a quirky mixtape or iPod playlist, except that its reach was broader, more like a Last.fm Internet radio channel, idiosyncratically sequenced, then made available for public consumption.”

This year’s Marathon begins at 11am with an outdoor kick-off on the plaza featuring the renegade street band Asphalt Orchestra performing music by STEW/Heidi Rodewald and Yoko Ono (and later on music by David Byrne/Annie Clark, Goran Bregovic, Björk, Frank Zappa and more).

Moving inside the Winter Garden, the Marathon will gather significant premieres alongside landmark legendary works: among the many highlights of the day are the explosive Bang on a Can All-Stars teaming up live with Philip Glass to perform the early 70s classic Music in Similar Motion; a rare performance by New York’s legendary Glenn Branca of his massive hour-long work Ascension: The Sequel; Prism Saxophone Quartet playing Xenakis’ crazy-hard Xas alongside works by young composers Kati Agócs with her meditative Hymn and Roshanne Etezady’s sparkling Keen; the incomparable and outer-planetary Sun Ra Arkestra; featured virtuosic solo performances by Timo Andres, Alejandro Escuer playing Gabriela Ortiz, Todd Reynolds, and more.

– April 6, 2011Posted in: Festivals/Concerts, Films/Documentaries

Brasslands is a feature documentary film currently in post-production shot in New York City and Guča, Serbia, at the 50th anniversary of the world’s largest brass music festival. Brasslands follows the members of Zlatne Uste, an unlikely New York Balkan brass band as they travel to Guča to represent the United States in the first ever competition for international bands. Once in Guča, we meet some of our other main characters, including Dejan Petrovic and Demiran Ćerimović, virtuosic trumpeters and former Guča champions.

Brasslands – Work-in-progress Trailer from meerkatmedia.org.

Featuring a rich soundtrack with driving rhythms fiery melodies performed by the best brass bands in the world, Brasslands is more than just a film about Balkan brass music. It is an unusual unique story that would otherwise never be told, that offers insight and exclusive coverage of the world’s most contagious music and musicians, and the tensions and struggles that lie beneath the surface.

Brasslands is made on a largely volunteer basis by a New York-based arts collective. At this crucial stage in production, we are calling on all lovers or Balkan brass music and documentary film to help fund a truly remarkable project. Your pledge will come with prizes, from exclusive field recordings made at Guča, to t-shirts and a trip for two to NY to attend North America’s largest Balkan brass festival.

The Residents Celebrate 40th Anniversary with Canada/U.S. Tour

– February 25, 2011Posted in: Festivals/Concerts

In 2012, iconic avant-garde weirdos the Residents will be celebrating 40 years as a band. Leading up to this milestone, they remain as active as ever with a sprawling world tour and three releases.

The Residents will embark on the “Talking Light Tour,” a rip that kicks off in Mexico City on March 15 and concludes in London on May 14. Along the way, the band will treat Canada well, with shows in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto and Montreal. All dates are available below with many more tour dates promised for the future.

A press release details the story behind the “Talking Light Tour” with the following statement:

The inspiration behind the Talking Light tour lies in The Residents’ interest in ghost stories. Like many of their projects, it began at a germ of an idea, then took on a life of its own. As the idea evolved, the Residents began to realize that what they saw as ghost stories had become a show about aging and death. They wanted to have fun with the concept, and in true Residents fashion, their idea of fun is just a bit darker and scarier than how the mainstream tends to define it. Each show begins with the title piece, “Talking Light,” which follows the tale of a “lonely teenager” who comes upon a mysterious skeleton baby in a remote desert cottage, and concludes with “Unseen Sister,” revolving around a woman and her invisible twin sister — and the weirdly conflicting emotions surrounding the death of her mother when the woman was just a child.

Each show also includes a third piece — which might be “Perchance to Dream,” “The Sleepwalker,” “Ghost Snake,” “Florence,” “Milton” or “Pudding in Disguise” — each of which is equally engrossing. All of these ghost stories carry a common theme, centered around TV culture and commercials, which ultimately asks the question: In a world where nearly everything has become defined and categorized, how do we fill our obvious, purely human need for the fuzzy, vague and supernatural — with TV commercials? The Residents have some creative answers for you.

On the tour, the band will be selling a DVD of ghost stories called Randy’s Ghost Stories, along with an instrumental CD called Dolar Generar and a new album called Lonely Teenager. The Ghost Stories DVD will be released by MVD Entertainment on March 15.

The Residents Tour dates:

Sufjan Stevens to tour Europe

– February 23, 2011Posted in: Festivals/Concerts

Do you remember 2006? That was the year we lost contact with Pioneer 10, Italy won their fourth FIFA World Cup, and No 5, 1948 by Jackson Pollock became the most expensive painting ever sold. Good times!

It was also the last time Sufjan set foot in Europe as a touring musician. And in 2011 he will do so again, landing first in Norway, moving to Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Germany, France, Belgium, the UK, Ireland, The Netherlands, Italy, and finishing in Spain and Portugal.

Sufjan has toured the US, Australia, and New Zealand and the shows involved gratuitous amounts of dancing, neon gaffe tape and balloons. We imagine this tour will be more of the same, in a very, very good way.

Tourdates and buy links are here.
