“Zappa The Hard Way” paperback out in november

– October 8, 2011Posted in: Books

In 1988, Frank Zappa toured with a twelve-piece band that had rehearsed for months, learned a repertoire of over 100 songs and played an entirely different set each night. It is why, in Zappa’s own words, it was “the best band you never heard in your life”- a reference to West Coast American audiences who never got the chance to see this particular touring ensemble due to the disharmony between Zappa’s “clonemeister” Scott Thunes and nine of the other band members.

Frank Zappa - Zappa The Hard Way

‘Zappa The Hard Way’ documents that last tour, which deteriorated as the tour progressed through America and on to Europe.

If you think touring can be fun, think again! Yes there were groupies and the usual paraphernalia associated with rock ‘n’ roll, but there was also bitterness and skulduggery on a scale that no one could imagine. Author Andrew Greenaway has interviewed the surviving band members and others associated with the tour to unravel the goings on behind the scenes that drove Zappa to call a halt to proceedings, despite the huge personal financial losses.

- Format: Paperback (234 x 156 mm)
- Pages 240 text, including 37 b/w images
- Foreword by Frank Zappa’s sister, Patrice “Candy” Zappa-Porter.
- Previously unpublished photos from the rehearsals, the studio, and other off stage shots by Lynn Goldsmith, official FZ photographer for the ‘Baby Snakes’, ‘Sheik Yerbouti’ and ‘Broadway The Hard Way’ releases. Also includes many live shots from the tour.
- Full 1988 discography and set lists.
- Publication date: 21st November 2011

This Planet Is Doomed: The Science Fiction Poetry of Sun Ra

– June 22, 2011Posted in: Books

THIS PLANET IS DOOMED, which collects the science-fiction poetry of Sun Ra, explodes into the stratosphere on 7/7/11, an auspicious day for numerologists and doomsday enthusiasts alike. 7/7 coincides historically with the detonation of 20 kiloton Little Feller II, the first of the last four above ground nuclear warhead tests conducted in the US. The date will also evidence interstellar overdrive when Saturn, Pluto , Uranus and Venus form an intense and rare alignment known as the Cardinal Grand Cross.

Sun Ra - This Planet is Doomed

THIS PLANET IS DOOMED serves up a traumatic torrent of future shock—deeply personal and critical commentary and unsettling advice to the people of Earth, who fail to acknowledge this planet’s role in the universe.

Poet Amiri Baraka’s estimable foreword, together with science fiction historian Bhob Stewart’s revealing introduction, set the stage for the heavy dose of the real and the unreal, which are delivered in the pages of THIS PLANET IS DOOMED.

This book was collected from tape recordings and transcriptions culled from the Sun Ra Archives by director Michael Anderson, who worked with Norton Records to compile a total of six albums—three collections of rare and unissued music recordings (on LP and CD) plus a trio (vinyl only) of unissued spoken word Sun Ra LP’s. A collector’s edition 45 of “I Am Strange” is also available.

THIS PLANET IS DOOMED was expanded with the addition of several key “lost” poems which appear here for the first time.

In conjunction with the publication of THIS PLANET IS DOOMED, the Orchard has launched downloads of the vinyl spoken word albums, which are entitled STRANGE WORLDS IN MY MIND, THE SUB-DWELLERS and THE OUTER DARKNESS.

Creative Music Studio Book Reissue to Coincide with CMS Day

– April 13, 2011Posted in: Books

The book that tells the story of the legendary Creative Music Studio -Music Universe, Music Mind: Revisiting the Creative Music Studio, Woodstock, New York (Ann Arbor: Arborville Publishing, ISBN 0-9650438-4-3) – is being reissued. The reissue coincides with events in 2011 designed to help cement the legacy of CMS as the twentieth century’s premiere study center for creative, improvised music.

Music Universe, Music Mind is a fascinating account of the opportunities that drew students from around the world to Woodstock, New York, from 1971 to 1984, for intimate study with some of the era’s leading jazz, contemporary, and world musicians – Anthony Braxton, Don Cherry, Dave Holland, The Art Ensemble of Chicago, Cecil Taylor, Trilok Gurtu, Karl Berger, Lee Konitz, Jack DeJohnette, Nana Vasconcelos, Ed Blackwell, Abdullah Ibrahim, Pat Metheny, Oliver Lake, Babatunde Olatunji, and many, many others.

The worldwide CMS community endures. In recognition of its vital contribution, The Center for Jazz Studies at Columbia University has dedicated April 16, 2011, as CMS Day at Columbia.

Throughout this day-long symposium, a series of panels will explore the history of CMS, assessing the impact of the CMS experience on musical developments and individual careers, as well as presenting CMS philosophies and practices, including ‘Music Universe’ – the concept CMS pioneered that adopts an inclusive, non-stylistic focus on the common ground of the world’s musical expressions, exploring and expanding multiple languages of contemporary improvised music; and ‘Music Mind’ – finding ways to deepen the experience of playing and listening to music, focusing on attention, expression and communication.

For more information on the book Music Universe, Music Mind, see the CMS Update blog at arborville.com, or contact the author, Bob Sweet, at bsweet@arborville.com.

Biography of electronic pop pioneer Jean-Jacques Perrey out now

– November 15, 2010Posted in: Books

You might not know the name “Jean-Jacques Perrey”, but chances are that you’re heard his music. It’s been everywhere: on commercials, in cartoons, and Top 40 hits. It’s been sampled by over 70 hip-hop artists including Ice T, Dr. Dre and A Tribe Called Quest. Even the Beatles sampled his music.

Just this year, his music was used in an episode of “South Park”, and in a television commercial for NFL Fantasy Football. For nearly 40 years his “Baroque Hoedown” tune (with Gershon Kingsley) has been featured in Disneyland’s much-loved “Main Street Electrical Parade.”

Jean Jacques Perrey

This book chronicles Perrey’s musical transformation from being just another young accordion player in France, to eventually becoming a pioneer of electronic pop music. By chance, as a young man, Perrey came upon a new French-invented electronic keyboard instrument called the “Ondioline,” and soon he became its chief salesperson. While demonstrating the instrument all over Europe, in the late 1950s, he was discovered by legendary French chanteuse Edith Piaf. She became Perrey’s mentor, and arranged for Perrey to travel to America, where he quickly became a musical innovator at the forefront of the synthesizer revolution. (Perrey was the second musician to own and record with a Moog synthesizer.)

In the ’60s, Perrey also recorded four albums for Vanguard Records, which are now considered electronic pop masterpieces. With their whimsical electronic sounds and catchy melodies, Perrey’s albums still stand the test of time, unlike other “Moog” albums of the same period. His musical playfulness and most of all, his sense of humor make Perrey’s music both clever and memorable.

Long before computers and digital technology, Perrey devised an ingenious method of “sampling,” using recording tape. When Perrey recorded “Flight of the Bumblebee,” he didn’t just do it the usual way. His version was created by recording the sounds of REAL bumblebees in a hive to create the frenetic classical theme! Using nothing but a simple razor blade, Scotch tape, and unbelievable patience, Perrey cut the recorded bee sounds into hundreds of tiny pieces. He then hand-spliced each bit of tape into a carefully-planned sequence, with the classic melody being “sung” by hundreds of buzzing bees! This feat took over 72 hours for Perrey to assemble just the melody line. The effect was (and still is) astonishing.

“Passport to the Future” documents Perrey’s life, and tells about his musical adventures, including rubbing shoulders with famous artists, such as Salvador Dali, Les Paul, Walt Disney, Alfred Hitchcock and many more.

Young people of today revere Perrey as a true musical pioneer and innovator. “Passport to the Future” preserves Perrey’s life as a true visionary, who at age 82, is still creating and performing his unique blend of electronic and happy, quirky melodies.

“Passport to the Future” documents Perrey’s life, and explains how he created his unique recordings. Scores of musicians who worked with Perrey are interviewed, including Angelo Badalamenti, Robert Moog, Gershon Kingsley, Dick Hyman, Vinnie Bell, Walter Sear, and many more.

New book: Discographisme Récréatif

– May 12, 2010Posted in: Books

Well, it’s been out for a little while already, but we thought you’d enjoy hearing about this title:

Discographisme Récréatif [Homemade Record Sleeves] is both a documentary and archival work begun in 1996. It’s composed of different iconographic montages made from record sleeves and CD jackets. The distinctive feature: these covers, be they 45s, 33s, or CDs, mostly found at flea markets, have all been redone or modified by anonymous individuals using the original covers as a guideline and as a source of inspiration. The first book issued in 2004 compiled around 100 examples of found altered or homemade record sleeves. The second one contains around 200 sleeves.

Homemade Recordsleeves

The first volume of this book was already an absolute winner and this new volume goes much further, with twice the number of images and larger pages. This book highlights a trove of found creative efforts with many handmade album covers that exceed the design qualities of the originals. A true celebration of the kind of visual playfulness that makes the distinction between official works of art and other creative endeavors so unimportant.
