Bob Thompson news
◦ september 3, 2003: The Sound of Speed, Bob Thompson's
landmark orchestral tribute to wheels, wings, and whirly birds,
finally on CD (Dionysus Records).
The Sound of Speed is Bob Thompson's 1960 concept LP. Recorded at the
dawn of the space age, each composition evokes a different mode of
modern transport, from Vespa scooters to Le Mans racers to rocket
ships. The vehicular vignettes are book-ended by authentic sound
effects, with vivid stereo motion.
Long out of print, long-sought, The Sound of Speed is an overlooked
gem from a bygone era of orchestral sophistication. It has been
remastered in sparkling stereo in the year that its creator, Bob
Thompson, turns 80
The Sound of Speed reissue includes:
- Liner notes by Irwin Chusid
- An interview w/ the artist by Will "the Thrill" Viharo
- Digital transfer and remastering
- Stereo sound

The music was composed and arranged by Thompson, a long-admired
Hollywood music figure who worked with Rosemary Clooney, Judy Garland,
Duane Eddy, and Bing Crosby, among others. But why take our word? Take
Henry Mancini's: "Bob's writing skill has always impressed me." Or
that of Van Dyke Parks: "Bob Thompson is a giant. In music and
character, a true romantic with an edge."
