News from the darkest corners of the musical universe:

◦ Monday, January 31, 2005 ◦
Hatwise Choice, the first volume of Hatfield & The North's archive CD series, is out now. This is the first album in thirty years to be entirely performed by the classic Hatfield line-up of Phil Miller, Pip Pyle, Richard Sinclair and Dave Stewart.

Hatwise Choice consists of over 68 minutes of 100% unreleased material culled from live concert tapes and first generation BBC radio recordings, the latter taken from the band's four John Peel sessions. The gig tapes show aspects of Hatfield's music never before heard on record - on stage, the tight control of the group's studio work is replaced by a looser, improvisatory approach. Flashes of humour give way to frightening electronic landscapes, interspersed with extended arrangements of the band's compositions and occasional moments of utter musical madness.

A request from the webmaster of the Enoch Light website:

Dear all -

Some of you may be aware that this year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Enoch Light! The actual date of the centenary is 18 August and I'm hoping that, with a little help from my exotic friends, I can get something to happen on that date.

I'd like to see something happen in NYC as that's where Enoch Light was based for most of his life as a producer. But it would also be good if something could happen in Canton, OH, as that's where he was born.
Being as I live some 3,000 miles away from New York, however, it's not going to be particularly easy to organise anything from this side of the pond - but this where you come in!

So, if anyone on the ground in NYC (or in other locations around the world) would like to help me organise something special for 18 August do please get in touch.
What I'd hope to do is get in touch with as many musicians who were involved in playing/arranging on Enoch Light's productions and get them all under one roof for an evening of chat, reminiscences and music (ideally in a venue where performances could actually take place).

Interested folk can email me directly and/or join an Enoch-specific discussion list I've just set up over at Yahoo Groups:

Looking forward to hearing from you.
